Mario and the Tribal Tattoo

Resident Evil and Human Flesh

Capcom is known for its viral marketing gimmicks, but with Resident Evil, it truly went over the top. To promote the game, Capcom created fake crime scenes in London. The campaign led curious onlookers to a website and then to a phone number linked to a butcher shop that sold meat presented as human flesh. Pieces of meat were carefully prepared to resemble hands, feet, and other body parts. While the stunt was undeniably shocking and garnered massive media attention, some critics argued that it overshadowed the game itself. Nevertheless, it remains one of the most talked-about promotional efforts in gaming history.

Mercenaries and Free Gasoline

For the launch of Mercenaries: Paid to Destroy, the publisher decided to take over a London gas station and transform it into a military-themed giveaway. Customers arriving at the station were treated to free gasoline, causing massive traffic jams and a media frenzy. The campaign was a clever nod to the game’s theme of chaos and destruction, but the logistical issues and overwhelming public response led to unintended consequences. While the game itself might not be remembered as a classic, the marketing stunt certainly left a mark.

Zelda and Japanese Rap

To promote The Legend of Zelda, a campaign in Japan featured a rap song. The idea was as absurd as it was unforgettable, bringing an unexpected musical twist to a franchise known for its epic fantasy adventures. The advertisement became a cult favorite among fans and demonstrated that even the most traditional games could embrace bold and unconventional promotional methods.
